Dark and amazing!

Svalbard is yet again covered in beautiful snow and the stars are shining ever so brightly! and yes, it`s dark here now, but that doesn`t matter when we`re getting some spectacular Northern Light-shows on the sky! :D At least I think is beautiful here now, it is peaceful! (not enough snow for snowmobiles/scooter to make noise everywhere) The last full moon was jsut lighting up everything, I can`t stop smiling around all the snowcrystals blinking in every direction^^ and with the darkness covering us, it`s also a natural tendency to gather people and make some good food together :) My kithen-mates finally got all gathered, to have a meal together!
Now that December is here, Christmas decorations are appearing everywhere in town! And since it`s dark all the time, all the Christmas stars and torches are just having an extra warm effect :) For the lighting of the Christmas-tree in town (yes, a real tree! :D ) a lot of people gathered, the band was playing Christmas carols, and just before the tree got lit; huge northern lights turned up above it! It was such a varm experience, and the perfect Christmas-moment! I will try to take a picture of the three, and the postbox for the Mine 2 Santa :) Thanks to Austin for the pictures!

Late Halloween/Tromsø-visit up-date!

Meet Duncan! My pumpking of 2012! Yes, I know I haven`t up-dated my blog for a looong while... But to be honest, that`s because not much have happen due to me being sick (yet again!). But! I had an amazing visit to Tromsø! Even though it`s not Svalbard, it`s still above the Arctic circle. And at least half of my amazing adventures on Svalbard are purely being spectacular because of the great friends I get here; so my time with these friends in Tromsø deserve a little blog-post :) (it`s my same excuse for posting about my Germany-trip, wich would never have been that amazing hadn`t it been for the epic people I get to know in the Arctic!) Anyways, Halloween was celebrated in Tromsø! And those who know me know how much I love Halloween! :D And of course me and Carl had to get a pumkin! Since we both bought him, we made him in to a two-face pumpkin so both of us got to carve him^^ and Halloween cannot come without my "poisonous mushrooms" and scary food :D
Oh, and to celebrate that Therese was getting old, we had an Oldies-party!
And I had the honour of trying to make Carl and Benny look like old ladies^^
I think they look great! :D So thanks to everyone who made my Tromsø-visit amazing! I`m looking forward to see you again, and see the ones I didn`t mett yet next time! Thanks to Antonio for the pictures!

IceBreaker Party: Arabian Night

As always, I love the IceBreaker! As I do with all costume-parties ;) This IceBreaker came in the middle of our exam preparation, but it was definitly a nice way to get a break from all work :) and since it was Carl`s Birthday ( => Happy Birthday Carl, I hope you enjoyed it! :D) we decided to make him a sultan costume! And I would be going as his personal bodyguard^^ So with joint forces of me, Irina and Daniela I think I can say he ended up as a great sultan!
As to be expected form this theme, there was quite a lot of sheiks, sultans and bellydancers. BUt there`s always some creative minds out there, so there was also some very good costumes! :)
It was a fun night with interesting and great food, alot of costumes and games, and good mood! And if I may say so myself, I don`t think I´ve ever looked so scary before! x)

Small escape from the lab =)

Between the labwork and exam preparation, me and Carl got hired in for a small sampling job. Result: A nice little boattrip on a beautiful day! So here`s just a few pictures to show how beautiful it`s getting up here :-)

Abruptly ending my two-week cruise...

Apparently my bad luck has not run out yet. After barely setting foot on the boat, I started to feel ill. Luckily we had no sampling the first day, so I went early to bed. And didn`t really get out of it again before my supervisor got me ashore in Ny-Ålesund to talk to a doctor. And a decision was made to send me home (back to Longyearbyen). At least I got lucky enough to get a ride with a helicopter! Something I´ve never done before :) It`s an amazing thing what a small dose of adrenalin can do, instead of sitting there feeling awful I at least got sharply awake to enjoy the trip! Helicopters are so much cooler than airplanes^^
So now I´ll try to get better before my class is back, and hope I still get a chance to finish the course.

A visitor from home: Erling! :D

So finally I managed to lure someone else from home up to my Arctic home :D And the first thing I got to bring Erling to do, was to join Pernilla on a hunting trip for ptarmigans :)
We got very lucky with the weather, it was quite a sunny and warm (8 degrees, much more in the sun) day :) And we were basicly traveling through several seasons, passing fall and winter as we crossed Platåfjellet.
Since the weather got a bit worse during the days, I decided to take the trip to Bjørndalen. The cabin is always the place to be, no matter what weather :) Therese also joined, so off we went fighting the wind (and the river!) to the Cabin! (To Bjørndaaaalen and beyond!) And on the way we stopped to find the sundile.
and of course Therese had to stop for pictures showing how "small" I look next to Erling... At least she found a new Arctic hero =)
Because of all the rain lately, the river was suddenly flowing high! Me and Therese had to bite our teeth together, take off shoes and socks and cross it barefooted (yes, we are that badass! ;)
But we got quickly warm again, when I got the fire going without using any (unused) matches! Didn`t take long to before we were lying around melting^^
Windy as ever, the cabin was quite cold when we woke up. But what are great friends for?^^
On our way home again, the river went down a bit but not enough for my hiking shoes... But at least the barefooted walk woke me up!
And of course, back in Longyearbyen we had to stop by the obligatory trip to Mine 2b :)
and having some fun at the rifle-range^^
With low clouds hanging over the valley, it`s not a big point going to the high tops, but Sarkofagen is always a nice hike :)
Thomas, a former classmate of mine, is back on Svalbard so he joined. And then we bumped into half the geophysics class, so we ended up being a nice big group =)
So at least I got to show Erling a bit of Svalbard, and it`s been great having a friend from home visitting again! :D and thanks to the guys that fixed the hot tub, we could finish with style outside in the first nights! :) Now I´ll start doing what I´m supposed to be doing here (trying to be a good student;). I´m looking forward to my next course, soon going out on a 16 day cruise! Huzzah! :D
